“When a god looks at you, he — or she — sees with divine eyes, near all-seeing eyes. To be beheld so is pain to all but the most slavish — it is a kind of mental rape. The basilisk of legend is but a cipher for a local god no-one dared to name.”
Was thinking of a pro-Overlord fantasy novel plot, and that sentence just popped up. If it found use in the novel, it would no doubt be a warning to the protagonist about to meet a near-omnipotent monster.
Near-omnipotent, since the novel would, of course, note that true omnipotence is a) impossible and b) fatal to any interesting plot.
