A parallel in the bit-world

Spamming works because no matter how dumb your proposition, in a large enough sample of people there will be a certain fraction that falls for it; and since it’s all bits, approaching a big enough number to include some of that fraction is easy. Thus spam exists, and works.

Blogging works because no matter how rare craft and perseverance in writing is, in a large enough sample of people there will be some that have it, and will do it for free and for all to view, for various reasons; and since blogging’s all bits, giving a large enough number of people the capacity to blog to include some of those writers is easy. Thus blogging exists, and works.

That’s a disturbing parallel, but it may be a better way to view things than the sometimes heard moan that “blogs are a disaster! This majority fraction is stillborn crap, and isn’t updated anymore anyway! The end is yea nigh; come to my hut over here and daub the wattle.”

(But who’s the 419 spam scam of blogging? What would that even be: something notoriously iconic to the point of meme-spawning… Oh wait, it’s probably John “Baconcat” Scalzi.)
