Horse cleaning

Heard on the news that M. A. Numminen turns 70 today. He’s a Finnish musician. He’s a bit difficult to describe, too.

Here’s “Jenkka hevosen puhdistamisesta” (1967), or a jenkka (fast-paced traditional Finnish dance) about the cleaning of a horse; the lyrics courtesy of the army field manual on the cleaning and maintenance of military warhorses.

No, really.

Like I said, difficult to describe; also difficult to not like.

The lyrics and a wild stab at translation are below the cut. (Also, “withers” is my best guess at some indecipherable part of horse anatomy. I do not want to google for clarification, because the Finnish word used is “ryntäät” (pl.), which remains in common usage only as a raunchy term for a big pair of (a human female’s) breasts. I repeat, I do not want to google for clarification. It would not end well.)

Jenkka hevosen puhdistamisesta

Puhdistamisen tarkoituksena on
edistää hevosen ihon toimintaa.
ja täten parantaa yleisvointia.
Torjua ihotauteja ja syöpäläisiä,
sekä saada hevosen karva sileäksi
ja kiiltäväksi.
Sekä saada hevosen karva sileäksi
ja kiiltäväksi.

Puhdistaminen aloitetaan vasemmalta puolelta.
Ensin puhdistetaan kaula sitten ryntäät vartalo jalat.
Sitten puhdistetaan hevosen oikea puoli
samassa järjestyksessä.
Puhdistuksen kestäessä on hevosen kaikki ruumiinosat huolellisesti tarkastettava.

Hevosen ihonhoitoon kuuluu kesällä myös uittaminen ja peseminen.
Hevosia saa uittaa enintään kolme kertaa viikossa.
Ja se suoritetaan hevosupseerin tai rehumestarin johdolla.

A jenkka on the cleaning of a horse

The purpose of the cleaning is
To help the functioning of a horse’s skin
And thus to add to its general health.
To ward off skin diseases and parasites,
And to make the horse’s coat smooth
And shiny.
And to make the horse’s coat smooth
And shiny.

The cleaning is started on the left side
First the neck is cleaned, then the withers body and feet.
Then the right side of the horse
In the same order.
As the cleaning is going on, all the parts of the horse are inspected thoroughly.

Horse skin care includes during summertime also swimming and washing.
Horses are to be taken to a swim three times a week at most
And that is to be done led by a horse officer or the master of hay.
